We’re decluttering. It’s not just spring cleaning, it’s getting rid of 30 years of accumulated stuff. We’ve got far more than we need. Our house is large enough that we’ve been able to hide it away. But it’s time to tackle it.
It's easier with help
Our daughter and son-in-law were able to visit over the holidays and they were very helpful in helping us get the basement started. It’s stayed pretty uncluttered since then. We’re tackling the garage next.
We’re going to have to figure out how to not get “sentimental” about all the stuff. Heck, we know there are boxes that have been packed since 2015… yep, 2015… we know it’s time to get rid of stuff but know it still can be hard.
Does it stay or does it go?
We recognize we have to still work on our mindset. We know there are very few things we will keep as we go through all the garage boxes, but we have to go through every box to make sure if there is anything in them we will keep.
We’re going to employ the “set it aside for one month” strategy. If we find something we are uncertain about, we’re going to set it aside, out of sight again, for one month. When we look at it again, it won’t be the first time in over a dozen years and we’ll be able to look at it with fresh eyes.
Say What?
You’re probably wondering how this blog from financial coaches is about money. It’s about changing a habit.
If you want to make a change in a spending habit (one we see a lot with our clients is reducing their Starbucks expenses), try the change for just one month. You may think you can’t make the change, but it is only one month. We know this works because when we’ve had clients try it, they have been very successful.
They went from “We can’t make that change!” to, in every case, “That wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.” They all then revisited the habit and determined they could stick with it. A few tweaked it a bit, but they all found that trying it for a month they could look back and make a more logical decision going forward.
Like mentioned above, even when you know you need to make changes to improve your life, it helps when you have someone help you out. Contact us if you are ready to make changes in your financial life. https://calendly.com/knapperfinancialcoaching
